ADHD-Informed Therapy

If you have ADHD, you may already know the frustrating feeling of understanding exactly what needs to be done but struggling to follow through. You may start projects with excitement and lose momentum, feel overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities, or find yourself working much harder than others just to keep up.

ADHD is not a lack of motivation, discipline, or intelligence. It is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and impulse control.

ADHD-informed therapy recognizes that many traditional approaches to productivity, organization, and emotional regulation were not designed with ADHD brains in mind.

At Neurodiverse Counseling, we provide ADHD-informed therapy for children, teens, and adults in Boston who are struggling with focus, follow-through, overwhelm, or chronic self-criticism. Many of our clients are capable, insightful people who feel frustrated by the gap between what they know they can do and what they are able to sustain in daily life.

ADHD-informed therapy helps make sense of these patterns and offers practical tools that work with your brain rather than against it.

What ADHD Can Look Like

ADHD can show up differently depending on age, environment, and individual differences.

In Children and Teens

In children and teens, ADHD may show up as:

• Difficulty sustaining attention
• Frequent forgetfulness
• Emotional outbursts or low frustration tolerance
• Trouble completing assignments
• Disorganization
• Hyperactivity or restlessness

Without supportive understanding, many children begin to internalize negative messages about themselves. They may start to believe they are lazy, careless, or “not trying hard enough.”

ADHD-informed therapy focuses on building skills while protecting confidence and self-esteem.

In Adults

ADHD in adulthood often looks different from childhood stereotypes.

Common experiences include:

• Chronic procrastination or difficulty getting started on tasks
• Time blindness or underestimating how long things will take
• Feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities
• Disorganization at home or work
• Emotional reactivity
• Cycles of burnout
• Anxiety or depression connected to feeling “behind”

Many adults seeking ADHD therapy in Boston were never diagnosed as children. Learning about ADHD later in life can bring both relief and confusion.

For many people, understanding ADHD helps explain years of feeling frustrated, misunderstood, or overly critical of themselves. Therapy provides space for understanding, validation, and meaningful change.

Our ADHD-Informed Approach

Our work is grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming framework. ADHD reflects a different way of processing information, not a personal failure.

Many people with ADHD have spent years trying to force themselves into systems that simply do not work for how their brain functions. In therapy, we focus on helping you develop strategies and environments that actually support the way your mind works.

ADHD-informed therapy may include:

• Executive functioning skill development
• Time management systems that fit your brain
• Emotional regulation strategies
• Reducing shame and internalized criticism
• Parent coaching and caregiver support
• Collaboration with psychiatrists when medication is part of treatment

Our goal is not to change who you are. It is to help you build structures and strategies that allow your strengths to show up more consistently in daily life.

ADHD in Women

ADHD is often overlooked in women and girls. Many women grow up being described as “scattered,” “too emotional,” or “not living up to their potential,” without anyone recognizing the underlying ADHD.

As a result, many women receive a diagnosis later in life after years of feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, or chronically behind despite working extremely hard.

Learning about ADHD can help make sense of these experiences and open the door to more supportive ways of managing daily life.

If you relate to feeling mentally overloaded or constantly trying to keep up, you may want to learn more about how ADHD presents in women.
