Depression

Depression affects more than mood. It can impact your energy, motivation, sleep, concentration, relationships, and sense of hope about the future.

Many people living with depression describe feeling constantly drained, disconnected from things that once mattered, or stuck in patterns that are difficult to change. Even everyday tasks can begin to feel overwhelming.

If you are feeling numb, exhausted, irritable, or disconnected from your life, you are not alone. Depression is common, and effective support is available.

At Neurodiverse Counseling, we provide evidence-based depression therapy for adults, teens, and young adults in Boston and throughout Massachusetts. Our work focuses on helping clients understand what they are experiencing, reduce the weight of depression, and gradually reconnect with parts of life that feel meaningful.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Depression

Depression does not look the same for everyone. Some people experience deep sadness, while others feel emotionally flat, restless, or constantly overwhelmed.

Common experiences include:

  • Persistent low mood or sadness

  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

  • Changes in appetite

  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness

  • Irritability or frustration

  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or social activities

In some communities, depression may show up less as visible sadness and more as irritability, overworking, emotional shutdown, or feeling constantly overwhelmed. This pattern is often seen in high-achieving professionals and in men who may feel pressure to hide emotional struggles.

If any of these experiences sound familiar, therapy can help you better understand what is happening and begin moving toward relief.

High-Functioning Depression

Many people struggling with depression appear to be doing well on the outside while quietly struggling internally.

You may still be meeting work responsibilities, caring for others, and maintaining daily routines while feeling:

  • Disconnected from joy

  • Chronically overwhelmed

  • Emotionally numb

  • Highly self-critical

  • Stuck in negative thought patterns

Because responsibilities are still being managed, this type of depression often goes unnoticed or minimized.

Many people tell themselves they should be able to “push through.”

You do not have to wait until things fall apart to seek support.

Our Approach to Depression Treatment

Depression often develops through a combination of stress, life experiences, biological factors, and patterns of thinking or coping that slowly become exhausting.

Therapy focuses on understanding the factors that may be keeping depression in place and developing practical ways to create change.

Treatment may include:

  • Identifying and shifting unhelpful thought patterns

  • Rebuilding motivation and engagement through behavioral activation

  • Developing tools for managing stress and emotional overwhelm

  • Strengthening emotional awareness and self-compassion

  • Exploring underlying experiences, transitions, or losses that may be contributing to depression

Depending on your needs, therapy may incorporate approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion-focused therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, and nervous system regulation techniques.

Therapy is collaborative and moves at a pace that feels manageable. The goal is not only symptom relief, but helping you reconnect with your sense of direction, meaning, and wellbeing.

When appropriate, we may also collaborate with psychiatrists to support medication management as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Depression and Co-Occurring Conditions

Depression often overlaps with other experiences, including:

Many people begin therapy unsure whether what they are experiencing is depression or something else. Part of the therapeutic process involves helping you understand what is happening and identifying the support that will be most helpful.
