Unwinding for Summer While Keeping a Routine for Fall: Finding Balance


Summer break is nearly here, and for neurodivergent students, the sudden shift from a busy semester to open-ended days can feel both liberating and disorienting. After juggling deadlines, rigid schedules, and sensory overload, it’s easy to either overcommit to new activities or fall into doing nothing at all. Striking a balance between relaxation and structure helps you fully recharge while ensuring a smoother transition back to school in the fall.


Create a Flexible Summer Routine --- Rather than following a strict schedule, aim for a flexible structure that keeps you grounded without feeling like more academic pressure. Here are a few ideas:

  • Morning Consistency: Wake up around the same time each day to maintain a natural rhythm.

  • Low-Pressure Activities: Schedule easygoing tasks or hobbies that you genuinely enjoy, such as reading, gardening, or casual gaming.

  • Theme Days: Dedicate certain days to different interests, like part-time work, creative projects, or social hangouts.


Explore New Interests Guilt-Free --- Summer is a perfect time to experiment and discover what lights you up—without worrying about grades or deadlines. Some ways to explore:

  • Try a Creative Project: Pick up painting, writing, or crafting.

  • Learn a New Skill: Take an online course or watch free tutorials on topics you’re curious about.

  • Spend Time Outdoors: Whether it’s nature walks or a simple picnic, fresh air can boost mental health.


Ease the Transition Back to School --- As the new semester approaches, small adjustments help you feel more prepared:

  • Gradual Study Habits: Review past notes, read a book a month, or set mini-goals for upcoming classes.

  • Sleep Schedule: Gradually shift your bedtime to align with the school routine, so you’re not overwhelmed in August.

  • Visualize Goals: Think about what you want to achieve next semester—both academically and personally.


Remember: Rest is Productive: It’s normal to feel guilty about slowing down, but true rest is a key part of your well-being. Relaxation and daydreaming help reset your mind and body.
