  • Olfactory (smell): Strong or unfamiliar scents, including perfume, cleaning products, or certain foods, can trigger distress or nausea.

  • Gustatory (taste): Sensitivities to food textures, temperatures, or flavors can lead to a limited diet that is often misunderstood as picky eating.

  • Proprioception (body awareness): Difficulty sensing where the body is in space can affect coordination, posture, and the desire to seek out heavy work or pressure.

  • Vestibular (movement and balance): This system governs how we respond to movement. Some autistic individuals crave spinning or swinging; others feel easily overwhelmed by motion.

  • Interoception (internal body signals): This lesser-known sense involves awareness of internal states such as hunger, thirst, temperature, or the need to use the restroom. Difficulty here can make it hard to identify or communicate physical needs.
